Rates
Regular fee: $95 per 50-minute session
Sliding Scale Discounts:
Sliding scale discounts are available for students and those on lower incomes to ensure that therapy is accessible for all. Call Jane on 612 414 0383 or visit the Appointment Request page to send an email to find out about how sliding scale discounts may apply to your situation.
Please be aware that sliding scale fee arrangements cannot by law be combined with insurance submissions or applied to a deductible.
Please also note that Jane does not accept MinnesotaCare or Medical Assistance.
Payment
Payment is required at the time of the session by cash or check. You can also pre-pay by credit card through this website, but please arrange this with Jane before doing so. Because credit card facilities are not available at either office, you will need to complete the payment online before your appointment and bring the receipt with you in lieu of cash or check. Note that because of the fees incurred with this service, this option is available to clients paying the full rate for a session or those using a designated HSA credit card. If you are benefitting from a sliding scale arrangement, you will need to add a $2.50 fee to the cost of the session.
FSA and HSA Arrangements
Depending upon the specifics of your plan, you may be able to fund your therapy through your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA). If you will be using such an arrangement, please speak with Jane to ensure you receive the necessary statements, receipts and invoices you need.
Working with Insurance
Jane does not work directly with any health insurance companies, although some providers, including HealthPartners, reimburse for services on an out-of-network basis, depending on the plan (see below for questions to ask your provider). If you would like to use this option, you will need to pay the full session fee and submit the claim yourself to your insurance company. Please discuss this option with Jane in order that she can provide you with the appropriate forms and receipts. Please note that sliding-scale discounts cannot be combined with insurance reimbursement.
As a general rule, health insurance companies will only pay for therapy if there is a diagnosable condition (eg: Dysthymic Disorder, Major Depressive Disorder, PTSD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder etc.). In-network therapists must make a diagnosis within two sessions and submit details of the diagnosis, the current symptoms and a treatment plan to the insurance provider. Insurance companies who are paying for treatment have the right to periodically review progress and ask about any shifts in treatment-focus to determine whether they will continue to pay for therapy. You have the right to request details of your diagnosis and treatment plan. Please note that couples therapy - where the relationship is the focus of the therapy - is NOT typically covered by insurance unless one of the parties has a diagnosable condition for which couples therapy is a legitimate and recognized treatment.
Therapists (such as Jane) who choose not to be in-network with health insurance companies still assess for diagnosable conditions, create treatment plans and keep regular progress notes - which you, as the client, can request details of. However, you do not have to meet criteria for a formal diagnosis to receive therapy, and you have much more flexibility in choosing the issues you would like to be the focus of therapy. This means that you can bring any issues with which you are grappling, whether relational, sexual, spiritual, cultural, work/career-related, bereavement-related or whatever else may be concerning you.
Questions to ask your insurance provider
If you would like to investigate the possibility of reimbursement for out-of-network coverage, please check your policy carefully and ask the following questions of your provider:
- Do I have mental health benefits?
- What is my deductible and has it been met?
- How many sessions per calendar year does my plan cover?
- How much does my plan cover for an out-of-network provider?
- How do I obtain reimbursement for therapy with an out-of-network provider?
- What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
- Is approval required from my primary care physician?
No-Show and Cancellation Policy
Unless there is an unavoidable emergency (eg: car accident, hospitalization, house fire) and you fail to show for a scheduled appointment or cancel with less than 24 hours notice, you will be charged the full fee for the session. No-show and cancellation fees are not reimbursable.
